Among those, sound intensity is a primary cue based on the variation of this magnitude following the inverse-squared distance law in the free field ( Coleman, 1963). Our everyday experience shows us that there are large variations in the stimulus intensity and quality depending on the distance to an acoustic source that are potential cues for distance estimation. In addition to the perceived source direction, human hearing is sensitive to the source distance. Perceiving accurately the location of a sound source is an essential capability of the human hearing system, enhanced through selective pressure due to its survival value (when the source is out of view or occluded, the auditory modality often plays a crucial role on assessing the location of the source). The results obtained in this study show that, depending on the spectrum of the auditory stimulus, reverberation can degrade ADP rather than improve it. Finally, the analysis of the acoustical cues suggests that listeners judged source distance using mainly changes in the overall intensity of the auditory stimulus with distance rather than the direct-to-reverberant energy ratio, even for low-frequency noise bands (which typically induce high amount of reverberation). The results obtained in the second experiment suggest that ADP can also be affected by stimulus bandwidth but in a less straightforward way (i.e., depending on the center frequency, increasing stimulus bandwidth could have different effects). Analysis of the frequency response of the room showed that the low accuracy observed for low-frequency stimuli can be explained by the presence of sparse modal resonances in the low-frequency region of the spectrum, which induced a non-monotonic relationship between binaural intensity and source distance. Our results showed an effect of the stimulus frequency on the perceived distance both for pure tones and filtered noise bands: ADP was less accurate for stimuli containing energy only in the low-frequency range. Then, we performed a second ADP experiment with stimuli consisting of continuous broadband and bandpass-filtered (with center frequencies of 0.5, 1.5, and 4 kHz and bandwidths of 1/12, 1/3, and 1.5 octave) pink-noise clips. First, we conducted an ADP experiment using pure tones (the simplest possible spectrum) of frequencies 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz. ![]() Here, we study how the spectrum of a sound arriving from a source located in a reverberant room at intermediate distances (1–6 m) influences the perception of the distance to the source. Previous studies on the effect of spectral content on auditory distance perception (ADP) focused on the physically measurable cues occurring either in the near field (low-pass filtering due to head diffraction) or when the sound travels distances >15 m (high-frequency energy losses due to air absorption). 2Laboratorio de Acústica y Percepción Sonora, Escuela Universitaria de Artes, CONICET, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Bernal, Argentina.1Laboratorio de Dinámica Sensomotora, Departamento de Ciencia y Tecnología, CONICET, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Bernal, Argentina. How does a protracted conflict affect displacement? Does a protracted conflict automatically lead to protracted displacement? To what extent is the displacement in these conflicts linked to violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) rather than other factors? How do those violations affect patterns of displacement? This article seeks to provide some answers to these questions, focusing on the example of Iraq from 2003 to the present day. As the ICRC report mentions, the displacement of civilians during a protracted war is a difficult issue that deserves our attention. They require responses that go beyond the usual ways of providing protection and assistance: they require a response in which the boundary between humanitarian aid and development is much more blurred, and in which different time frames coexist, for example by combining emergency aid with long-term programmes. Recently, however, “protracted conflict” has become a concept in its own right, and there is now an awareness that such conflicts change the nature of humanitarian aid. In fact, this kind of war is as old as humanity itself. Long wars are not a new phenomenon – there are historical conflicts with evocative names such as the Thirty Years’ War and the Hundred Years’ War, and the twentieth century also saw many long-running conflicts. Protracted conflicts are a major source of human suffering and a cause of protracted displacement, migration and development reversals. The average length of time the ICRC has been present in the countries hosting its ten largest operations is more than 36 years. ![]() The ICRC spends about two-thirds of its budget on protracted conflicts. In a report published in 2016, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated: ![]() In recent years, humanitarian organizations have consistently emphasized the long duration of many armed conflicts and the ways in which that duration affects humanitarian aid. It discusses how Iraq has been struggling with acts of violence, hostilities and IHL violations that have generated displacement and human suffering. Based on the literature produced by humanitarian organizations and academia, this article aims at analyzing what triggers displacement in protracted conflict, highlighting the role of international humanitarian law (IHL) violations. The displacement of civilians during a protracted war is a difficult issue that deserves our attention, and Iraq is unfortunately an emblematic example of this phenomenon. ![]() We’d love to receive either a story, picture or video of an act of kindness either being done for you for.
